Internet Explorer is the most widely used browser in the world. Unfortunately, it’s also the browser that’s most susceptible to hacking.

Recently, a flaw in the security systems of IE versions 6 through 11 was found. This flaw allows hackers to gain access to a user’s computer after clicking on photos, links, or visiting fake websites made by the hackers in order to break in.

The security flaw is known as a “Zero-Day Flaw”, meaning that by the time IE users were informed of the risk, it was already being exploited.

Multiple solutions to the problem have been suggested – using Enhanced Protection Mode (only available for versions 10 and 11 or the browser), disabling the Adobe Flash plugin, or simply using a different browser until the problem is solved.

“I think it’s over exaggerated so people would think more about it,” says Melanie Canatella, freshman.

However, on May 1, Microsoft issued an update to fix the bug. The update is automatically installed for those with automatic updates enabled, but for those who don’t, it’s recommended to install it immediately. Microsoft also released the patch for Windows XP, even though they discontinued support for the operating system on April 8.

“[Issuing the fix for XP users] was a nice gesture,” says Canatella, “but it was a waste.” After the discontinued support, releasing the fix for XP users could be seen as a waste. However, many people are thankful that this fix was released for all Internet Explorer users.
