Cars are a big part of people’s lives and the question on many budgeting Americans is if they are willing to continue to buy gas powered cars over the increasingly popular electric cars.

Over the past three years, electric car sales have risen dramatically due to their ability of pollution-free engines and low costs for electricity to run the car itself. The cars have a large, rechargeable battery to create power for the car. These batteries are 100% recyclable, but take many hours to charge. Also, electric cars can really come in handy with short to medium distance travel.

Mrs. Samra, a Media Center Specialist at Patterson Mill, says electric cars are “good for the environment, but they are very costly. Currently, with the economy in bad condition and taxes on the rise, electric cars will be dwindling on the marketplace.”

As the economy is slowly recessing, it is going to be a challenge to collect enough money to buy an electric car or even a gas car sometimes. Most electric cars today cost at least $40,000 which is $20,000 more than an average gas car. “The initial cost for an electric car is much more than you probable save in gas money,” says Ms. Kitner, a high school English teacher at Patterson Mill. “Hopefully, the cost will come down and there will be more viable options for the average consumer.”

Johnathan Myers, a freshman at Patterson Mill, feels that electric cars are “way too expensive for the average consumer and if I had the money, I would buy one. In the meantime, I hope that electric cars will become less expensive so even more people can use it.”

Electric cars have lots of positives and negatives. Many people praise the fact that electric cars are environmentally friendly and don’t release carbon dioxide. On the other hand, many dislike the price of an electric car. In the future, hopefully manufacturers will resolve issues with electric cars so people afford their ideal car.
