There’s a new club in Patterson Mill called the Step Team. This group was created by Chyna Latimer and Lauren Wright, both Seniors at Patterson Mill with the supervision of Profe Higgins, Spanish Teacher at PMHS.

This team was inspired by “African dance and culture, but with a modern twist,” states Lauren wright, creator of the step team. Lauren was also inspired by herself and her desire to be in a sport. Many may feel that in order to be in a sport, one has to start when younger to grow talent. But with this club, one does not have to be afraid of being judged or getting through tryouts, in addition to offering schedule leniency.

Recently, the step team performed on March 10th for one of the High School lunches, to promote the new club and “bring in new members,” says Derrick Beatty a Senior at PMHS who involved with this newly added club. At meetings, members learn new steps, organize themselves, and fix anyone whose steps may be off. With this new club addition, this is the 31st official club offered here at Patterson Mill.

There are currently 18 members, but is growing in numbers. As Derrick Beatty puts it, “it peaked his interest.” Anyone is welcome to join and participate in this new and exciting club. This club allows not-so-athletic people to feel included and explore new hobbies. Stepping or step-dancing is commonly known as a form of percussive dance in which the members body is used as an instrument to produce complex rhythms and sounds through a mixture of footsteps, spoken word, and hand claps.

If you are interested in joining, go to Profe Higgins room (E205) and talk to her about your interests. The team meets every Tuesday and Thursday from 2:15 to 3:15 after school in the cafeteria.
