Many students don’t know that the Accuplacer places students where they are most likely to thrive in their academic pursuits, through an adaptive web-based assessment tool that determines skills in reading, writing, and math.

This test is open to high school senior graduates or college students, and transferees for the same purpose. Harford Community College offers the Accuplacer as a test to evaluate students’ readiness for specific courses.  This test is “similar to the SAT used to place you in math and reading courses for community college,” says Mira Dubbs, Senior at Patterson Mill High School.

A typical test consists of reading comprehension, sentence skills (Writing) and elementary algebra. It meets the assessment needs of community colleges, four-year colleges, technical schools, and high schools.

The Accuplacer shows a student where they are most likely to succeed and demonstrates their abilities as a student and in their career field. Most higher education institutions use a college placement test. The Accuplacer is widely used by colleges nationwide, and is “highly recommended” to take, says Ma Ruby Rose Burchett, director for testing at HCC. Also, it is a tool which can be “used to determine if a student is ready for college-level courses,” says Ms. Burchett.

The test evaluates English-As-A-Second Language (ESL) commonly referred to as sentence meaning, English-As-A-Second Language (ESL) commonly known as reading skills, English-As-A-Second Language (ESL) known as listening, English-As-A-Second Language (ESL)or language use, sentence skills, the write placer/ written essay, reading comprehension, elementary algebra, arithmetic, and college-level math.

Each of these sections is scored differently. Essays are scored from 2-8, 8 being most efficient. The other parts have ranging scores from 0 to 120. Individual institutions determine cut scores.  Mira Dubbs states that has helped because she is “starting at a community college” and “had not taken the SAT yet.”

For further information, one may go to Harford Community College’s website to find information on the Accuplacer and details about this test. The test has many study tools, such as an app to prepare and practice.
