Propaganda? Being hung up around Patterson Mill? Mr. Llewelyn’s drawing and painting class is the reason for that.

Mr. Llewelyn says that the propaganda unit in his drawing and painting class is to teach students about “printmaking and the relief process of printmaking with linoleum.” He says that propaganda is theme for this unit because “printmaking and linoleum block printing has been a historical medium for the propaganda posters dating back to the world wars and communism.” He says it even dates back to “patriotism in the United States.”

Mr. Llewelyn says that because the unit is about printmaking, he thought that making propaganda would not only be historically accurate, but also that propaganda posters “would be fun.” Since the students are making propaganda they are able to “pick any topic they wanted to push.” Llewelyn says that the topic could be good or bad, because “propaganda is good or bad.” He states that the purpose of the project is to “do a 9×12 linoleum carving pushing some sort of idea.”

Hannah O’Steen, a junior and student in Llewelyn’s drawing and painting class, says that she likes the project. She says that the propaganda unit has two purposes. One, she says, is to “let artists learn how to do printmaking.” Hannah says that the other purpose is of the project is to “help with politics and expressing beliefs.

Overall, the point of having students make propaganda is to teach them an art medium used to express ideas throughout history, and to help students push an idea through their art and express a belief in a creative way.
