With the holidays having come and gone, I bet you didn’t notice you also missed Houseplant Appreciation Day, January 10th. While people often associate houseplants with middle-aged women who meticulously water green, leafy giants, a new trend has taken place in the world of modern plants: succulents.

Up until now, succulents have typically been used in dry areas as a lawn alternative and even a fire-retardant. But, with urban lifestyles on the rise (and the fact that the plants are cute) this new houseplant is surging in popularity.

The fleshy, water-retaining plants require little maintenance, and can go weeks without a watering. Succulents also reproduce incredibly easily; breaking off a leaf from the plant and sitting it on top of soil will produce a new succulent in a matter of weeks. (See below)

But succulents aren’t just for the windowsill…

This wedding bouquet breaks away from the norm that your mother probably had. These bouquets can then be replanted and propagated so the succulents can be enjoyed for years to come, it “can bring a lot more enjoyment than cut flowers that only last a few days,” says Marialuisa of Urban Succulents. For brides or their bridal parties, “it’s like the gift that keeps giving, or growing in this case.”

Yes, that is real. Succulents are first glued to a fake nail and then placed on your nail bed. The look might not be practical, but it’s perfect if you’re a green thumb.

Other uses include…

This January, take a minute to appreciate your house plants or pick up your own succulents for a plant that will aloe-ways brighten up your space.
