Valentine’s Day is thought to have originated in Rome at a festival where men and women were paired up with one another.  Today, it is considered a special holiday symbolizing love to many people all around the world. Valentine’s Day celebrations can include going out to dinner or just staying home and can be shared by friends or couples. Gifts on Valentine’s Day are a great way to show love for someone you care about. Cards, flowers, and candy are some of the most popular traditional gifts.

In the United States, over 190 million cards are sent each year, not including cards that children in schools exchange. Over decades, Valentine’s Day has become a popular gift-giving event, with couples spending a great amount on each other. The amount of money spent has increased every year, from $108 per person in 2010 to $131 in 2013 for example. Men often spend about twice as much as women do for the holiday, but surprisingly enough, both single males and females spend more than married ones. Many people do not even buy gifts just for a partner: they may buy gifts for friends, other family members, and even their pets.

When writing to your partner in a fairly new relationship, safe comments are best. Words along the lines of, “I love that we are spending this special day together” are great.  For a long-term relationship, a Valentine’s Day card is a way to share intimate thoughts. For example, one could write, “I cherish every Valentine’s Day that we have spent together, and I can not wait to create new Valentine’s memories with you.” It’s also a great time to add more emotional quotes, such as the poet, Robert Browning’s quote, “Grow old with me! The best is yet to be.” Even adding some cute and childlike sayings in there could make your partner laugh, such as the comedian’s Rita Rudner’s, quote, “I love being married. It’s so great to find one special person you want to annoy for the rest of your life.”

Women appreciate knowing their partners listen to them and value their interests, so a partner can win over his valentine by taking her to a dream destination she has mentioned always wanting to visit. If he is married, another thoughtful gesture is to please his date with an at-home dinner date. Both could dress up in what they feel most comfortable in to make it the most memorable night.

Many restaurants are open on Valentine’s Day and love to support this holiday with specials and amazing deals. Going out to dinner can be an option for most couples or friends. California Pizza Kitchen is offering a special Valentine’s Day meal for two on February 10-14, which includes an appetizer, two entrees, and a dessert from a prix fixed menu for $35.00. At Papa John’s, there’s a special of getting a medium 1-topping heart-shaped pizza on thin crust with a brownie for $15.00,or get 2 for $18 in select stores. Another deal is from TGIFriday’s: their 2 for $30 promotion features two premium entrees and one shareable dessert.

Flowers are another way to say “I love you” to a friend or significant other.  Valentine’s Day is one of the busiest days of the year for florists. There is such a high demand for roses during Valentine’s Day that often the price of a dozen roses doubles from the normal price. Candy may also get a bit pricey, so you might want to opt for the cheaper candy such as candy hearts which are also a fun way to show you care. Candy hearts have cute sayings stamped on them and are a great way to tell someone you like them in a romantic way.  Giving your crush a candy heart that says “Be Mine” is adorable and fun!  In addition to candy hearts, chocolate is often given as a Valentine’s gift. Many chocolatiers make heart-shaped designs for Valentine’s Day.

If you’re on a budget, but still want to say “I love you,” homemade Valentine’s gifts are just as fun and maybe even more thoughtful.  If your loved one likes music, you can create a playlist of love songs. You can also cut heart shapes out of paper and write cute “I love you” notes.  If you like to write, turn the simple notes into an “I love you” poem.  If you want to give the gift of sweet treats, homemade cookies are a perfect choice.  You can make heart-shaped cookies and decorate them with red sprinkles, or go to the grocery store and buy strawberries and chocolate to make your own chocolate-covered strawberries.

There are many craft projects with a Valentine’s theme for those people to like to make things.  Crafts can be fun for groups of friends or a couple that wants to make a keepsake for each other. A cute craft for a loved one or friend is to make them a heart shaped bookmark. It is as simple as 5 steps.

  • Create a template of a heart, about 1 1/2 inches wide.
  • Cut out with a utility knife  and trace onto heavy card stock.
  • Copy it at 80 percent, cut out, and trace onto decorative paper, such as wrapping or origami paper.
  • Cut out both hearts, and use a glue stick to secure smaller patterned heart to center of the larger one; let dry.
  • Finally, trace bottom half of inner heart with a utility knife, cutting through cardstock beneath. Then your valentine can slippages between the hearts.

There are many other cute and fun crafts such as heart shaped pot holders, crayon hearts, heart shaped soap, and so many more.
